In an effort to free some money from the books and reduce its luxury tax hit for next season, the Los Angeles Lakers are attempting to package Slovenian swingman, Sasha Vujacic, with a future first round pick in an effort to trade him. Selected 27th overall back in the 2004 NBA Draft by the Lakers, Vujacic has spent the last six seasons with the team and is a two-time NBA Champion (2009, 2010). Vujacic’s best season came during the 2007-08 season when the combo-guard had a sensational year shooting the ball for Los Angeles and averaged 8.8 ppg while shooting 45.4 percent from the field and 43.7 percent from downtown. In 409 career games with the Lakers, Vujacic holds averages of 4.9 ppg, 1.7 rpg and 1.2 apg in 14.5 minutes per contest. Los Angeles, which did not have a first-round draft pick in 2010 as a result of the Pau Gasol trade, would gladly surrender another first-round pick (one that more than likely will be in the latter part of the first round) to purge itself of the one-year, $5.48 million remaining on Vujacic’s contract. Since the Lakers are well over the salary cap, shedding Vujacic’s contract would result in even greater relief when it comes time for the team to pay the Association its penalty check. Still, it would be an unfortunate end to Vujacic’s tenure with the team, a colorful player fondly known as “The Machine,” who could easily amaze as he could anger you from one night to the next.
